Profile of the Master's program
The Master’s degree in Computer Science is characterized by small groups and a very good supervisory relationship between students and professors.
The course is characterized by interesting and practice-relevant topics that are dealt with at an academic level.
There are many opportunities for project work and Master’s theses.
The Master’s degree program in Computer Science offers the opportunity to deepen knowledge that has already been acquired in an undergraduate degree program in the field of application-oriented computer science.
The course focuses on four subject groups:
- Data science: methods and techniques for handling and using today’s enormous amount of data in a meaningful way and extracting correlations and knowledge from it
- Cyber-physical systems: knowledge of the interaction of hardware, software and communication mechanisms to develop systems for Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things
- Software techniques: Technologies and concepts for complex software systems, model-driven development and distributed systems
- Visualistics and analytics: Mixed reality, i.e. the interaction of real and virtual reality, advanced topics from computer graphics as well as pattern recognition and image processing
Students have the opportunity to receive both a specialized and a more generalized education.
The degree program conveys the current state of research in the selected subject groups and enables students to explore new areas and continue their education independently.
Research and practice
In research, Master’s students can participate in ongoing research projects (e.g. on data mining in IT security, authentication with chip cards or the Internet of Things).
We have contacts and joint projects with many small and large companies in Bavaria and beyond.
Master concept
The Master’s degree program is divided into the compulsory modules “IT Management” and “Scientific Methods in Computer Science”, five compulsory elective modules, which can be freely selected from the various subject groups, a seminar to deepen scientific work, two project papers and the Master’s thesis.
In principle, it is also possible to work close to home at the same time, although this may result in an extension of the course by one or two semesters.
In the first two semesters, students focus on academic modules, project work and interdisciplinary modules.
In the third semester, they write their Master’s thesis.
The [Modulhandbuch] provides information on the content of the individual modules. The [Studien- und Prüfungsordnung] forms the legal basis of the degree program.
Questions about the content of the course will be answered by the course director Prof. Dr. Jens Grubert.

Career prospects
The currently more than 200 IT companies in Upper Franconia and many other companies with their own IT specialists are finding it comparatively difficult to recruit qualified new employees in view of the increasing demand nationwide.
The interest of regional companies in this course is correspondingly high and committed.
This is because even more and better qualified specialists are required, particularly for sustainable economic development, which leads to the creation of jobs in the long term.
Graduates of the Master’s degree course acquire comprehensive skills for the independent processing and coordination of complex projects with a high proportion of software.
At the same time, the Master’s course provides a special qualification for taking on management tasks in companies, businesses and public institutions.
In addition, graduates of the Master’s degree program are so familiar with independent scientific working methods that they can also find their place in purely scientific or science-related institutions in research and development.
